Men’s Tennis Ends Year In National Ranks

AUGUSTA, Ga. –The GRU Augusta Men's Tennis team began the 2014 portion of their season ranked nationally in the top 25 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the Jaguars ended the year in the same fashion with a No. 22 spot on the national list of the top-50 universities for Division II tennis.

The Jaguars went 19-7 overall this year and posted a 6-3 mark in Peach Belt Conference play. Along with the team's national ranking, the veteran doubles-duo of Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes finished their collegiate career ranked No. 17 in the nation by the ITA. Named Peach Belt All-Conference, Cabellos (Barcelona, Spain) and Guimaraes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) went 17-4 overall in the No.1 doubles spot and 5-3 in the PBC. The pair ended their season on a 7-and-3 run, while going 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents.

The Jags improved their national team ranking after the ITA listed them as the 23rd–best team in the nation in the last poll on April 30th. Including GRU Augusta, the Peach Belt had 10 teams on the top-50 list for the men. The Jaguars also ended the year ranked fourth in the Southeast Region, while Cabellos and Guimaraes notched fifth place for doubles competition

With an overall .731 winning percentage, head coach Mike Mcgrath led his squad to an 11-1 record at home in Newman Tennis Center while seeing sophomore Gustav Anderson and Victor Guimaraes earn PBC All-Academic honors.
