SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 23 GRU Augusta Jaguars couldn't overcome the first-needed No. 5 Armstrong Pirates on Monday afternoon, falling 5-0 in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional.
The Jaguars end the season ranked No. 23 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) with a 19-7 overall record, while Armstrong (18-6) advances to the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Round of 16, held in Altamonte Springs, Fla., from May 14-17.
Ranked No. 16 in the nation, GRU doubles duo Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimares battled seventh-ranked Jaan Kononov and Pedro Scocuglia in the first doubles spot. The Jags tallied six points, but fell 8-6 after Arthur Andrade and Joao Gabriel Freitas fell 8-2 in the third doubles slot that finished first.
In the final doubles match, Romain Brunie and Romain Ferreria fell 9-7 to Ignacio Hernandez and Damian Okrutny, giving the Pirates a 3-0 advantage heading into singles. Armstrong's Luca Cerin downed Joao Gabriel Freitas 6-0, 6-0, before Damian Okrutny gave the Pirates their fifth and final point with a two-set win over Gustav Anderson at No. 6 singles.
