Jags Tennis Enters Final Countdown

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta tennis teams are only nine days from opening their 2014 spring schedules with matches on their home turf at the Newman Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 1-2.

The men ended the 2012-13 season ranked No. 22 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Tennis Rankings and the women finished at No. 33. Entering his 16th season as head coach, Michael McGrath led both his squad's last year to earn at-large bids to the NCAA Southeast Regionals on April 27th at Columbus State University where the men fell in the second round to Lander and the women in the first round to Georgia College.

The Jags begin their new slate with a new name and new team on Feb. 1 when the men host Gardner Webb at 12:00 p.m. The women open their season and join the men on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. to host Johnson C. Smith at Newman Tennis Center. The GRU women commence Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 5 against Clayton State, before the Jags men and women host Anderson on Feb. 12 and Coker on Feb. 14.

Both teams hit the road from Feb. 15 until March 5 when the men and women welcome Lander for matches at 2:30 p.m. The women host a single league match against Montevallo on March 9 and the men enjoy a single contest against Erskine on March 12 at home.

After a few road matches at Flagler and Belmont Abbey, both GRU teams will play at home against Georgia College on March 22, North Georgia on March 29, and Young Harris on March 30 before they wrap up the regular season at Francis Marion on April 5.
