ASU Rallies At ITA Regional

SUMTER, S.C. – The Augusta State doubles team of Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes enjoyed the most success during the recent ITA Regionals, hosted by Coker

Nationally-ranked Armstrong Atlantic dominated the weekend in both singles and doubles. Georgi Rumenov and partner Dan Regan took the doubles title while Rumenov also earned the singles title at the ITA Regional Sept. 21-24. ASU's Cabellos and Guimaraes assured their place on the court, reaching the semifinal round losing 8-1 to Armstrong's elite duo.

In men's singles, the Jaguars won six of their 15 matches in the rounds of 128, 64, 32, and 16. Romain Brunie led off the round of 128 with a win over Wingate's Neal Towlson, but no pattern formed for ASU. It was Guimaraes who lasted the longest for the Jags reaching the round of 16 to lose 6-1, 6-0 to Armstrong's Sven Lalic. Collectively, the men returned Sunday for the consolation round and won seven of their 11 matches played. Guimaraes and Gustav Anderson reached the quarterfinals with Anderson losing 6-4, 6-1 and Guimaraes enduring an injury to lose.

The women's weekend followed the same script as Armstrong dominated in doubles and singles. The Jags battled with Lissa Murakami and Cecilia Pimentel, who reached the quarterfinals in doubles and dropped the match 8-3 to Armstrong's Clara Perez and Jennifer Rink. It was AASU's Filipovski and Kritickova who earned the women's doubles title, beating out their teammates in an 8-1 victory for the tournament title.

In the individual competition, Murakami made it to the round of 64 dropping her match 6-2, 6-3 and Liv Pettersson earned her way to the round of 32 where she was shutout 6-0, 6-0. Pimentel was the standout for the Jags in the consolation round handling Wingate's Morgan Watson 6-1, 6-2 to go to the quarterfinals where she lost 6-2, 6-0 to North Georgia's Cameron Williams.
