Fernandes Lands National Honors

AUGUSTA, Ga. – After helping lead Augusta State to the winningest season in school history, Bernardo Fernandes has been named an All-American in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, according to announcement Thursday from the ITA headquarters in Skillman, N.J.

A senior from Santana do Livramento, Brazil, Fernandes enjoyed a tremendous 2012 campaign. As one of three seniors on the squad, Fernandes was part of an ASU squad that was ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation and earned the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky.

In a span of 19 days, the Jags registered four consecutive victories over teams ranked among the top 17, all in NCAA Tournament play. They advanced to the Final Four, taking down both No. 17 Drury and No. 9 Grand Canyon before bowing out to No. 2 West Florida in the National Semifinals.

Fernandes tallied a 15-8 mark – all at No. 1 singles – and went 3-3 vs. nationally-ranked opponents. He was ranked as high as No. 30 in the nation in singles and teamed with fellow senior Henrique Boturao for a No. 20 doubles ranking and a 16-11 overall record.
