AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State's tennis teams took down Young Harris in non-conference action at Newman Tennis Center Friday, as the men continued their momentum by failing to drop a set and the women's squad recorded an opening victory to start its season well.
For the men, Bernardo Fernandes notched his first win at No. 1 singles 7-5, 7-5 over Joan Valls, then combined with Henrique Boturao to cruise to an 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles.
The most exciting match came from the No. 2 doubles slot, as a tiebreaker was needed before Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes kept the shutout alive with a 9-8 (7-2) win.
In women's action, Marina Ferreria scored a convincing 6-2, 6-1 takedown of Lina Parrra Pava in No. 2 singles, then teamed with Victoria Lindqvist for a 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Roberta Oliveria's 2-0 day consisted of a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles before pulling out a 9-7 win in No. 3 doubles alongside Julie Fontaine.
Lissa Murakami also started her singles season off well, taking a 7-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 singles position.
The men return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 7 when the Jags host Johnson C. Smith in non-conference action, while the women's team hits the courts Wednesday, Feb. 8 on the road at Wingate.
