ASU Netters Ranked No. 13

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State's men's tennis team received some encouraging news Monday heading into the holiday break, as they came in at No. 13 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top-25 Division II men's rankings Monday.

The Jags sit behind Armstrong Atlantic State (No. 3), Columbus State (ninth), Lander (11th), and Flagler (12th); Francis Marion and Georgia College sit 14th and 15th, respectively, to give the Peach Belt Conference seven of the top 15 teams.

ASU is led by Bernardo Fernandes, who ended last season ranked 22nd with a 10-12 record against a loaded conference schedule. He tallied four wins in two fall tournaments, and will enter the spring semester ranked 30th individually in men's singles, tailed closely by Henrique Boturao in 36th. Boturao scored a 6-4, 6-4 takedown of ninth-ranked Matus Mydia in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional in September en route to a quarterfinal finish.

The two continue to combine as ASU's double squad, ranking 20th in the latest poll. They soared to a high ranking of 13 last season, going 13-9 overall. Marina Ferreira received votes in the women's individual poll, after cruising to the final 16 in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional. She ended last season 13-8 in the No. 2 singles slot.
