AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State men's and women tennis teams competed in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional hosted by Francis Marion in Florence, S.C., over the weekend.

For the men, Henrique Boturao gained the No. 12 seed in the men's A draw and took advantage, reeling off three straight wins, including a 6-4, 6-4 takedown of No. 2 seed Matus Mydia from Armstrong Atlantic. He finally fell in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Olivier Simonet of Clayton State.

Bernardo Fernandes began the tournament seeded fifth, and cruised in his opening two matches before losing 6-0, 6-2 to the No. 13 seed Pedro Scocuglia from Armstrong.

Victor Guimaraes (6-0, 6-2, Ret) advanced to the round of 32 before falling 6-2, 6-3.

In the B draw, Max Coulomb and Jenner Stevenson both won their opening matches before having to pull out of the tournament.

Stevenson and Coulomb also combined to win their opening A draw doubles match, 8-3, and then upset the #6 seeded team of Danilo Sardelli and Gordan Divljak 8-6 to advance to the quarterfinals. They couldn't keep the momentum going against the No. 4 seed, though, bowing out after an 8-4 loss.

For the women, No. 15 seed Marina Ferreira cruised into the round of 16, starting with a 6-1, 6-0 victory and following it with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Barbora Sebkova of Flagler before falling in the round of 16.

In the B draw, Julie Fontaine blasted her way through her first two matches, dropping just two games total to advance to the round of 16 before withdrawing; fellow Lady Jag Roberta Oliveira won her first match 6-2, 6-2 before pulling out as well.

Oliveira and Liv Petersson combined to win their first match in the women's doubles A draw, taking down the No. 7 seed combo of Corin Hallman and Victoria Stephens, 8-6. But they couldn't continue the good start, falling 8-4 in the second round.

The teams are back in action Friday, Sept. 30 as they host the Chick-Fil-A Invitational at Newman Tennis Center.
