Van Wyk Brothers Pace Augusta Golf in Opening Round of the Southwestern Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Ca– It was a windy day in the opening round of the prestigious Southwestern Invitational, hosted by Pepperdine at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. The Augusta University Men's Golf team battled wind gusts nearing 30 mph to sit in a tie for 10th.  

 

Brothers Ben van Wyk and Alex van Wyk paced the Jaguars, with an identical score of 76 (+4) in the opening 18 holes of play. They are tied for 23rd heading into the second day of play. 

On a challenging day that saw an average score of 77.12, Hampus Wijkstrom posted a 9-over par opening round.

Arizona State leads the team scoring after an opening round score of 4-over-par (292). The Sun Devils are followed by SMU (+5) and San Diego State (+6). 

There is a three-way tie for first place: Shane Ffrench (USC), Noah Goodwin (SMU) and David Puig (Arizona State). Ffrench held a two-stroke lead heading into the final hole before a double bogey brought him back to the field.

The Jags will be back in action today for the second round of the Southwestern Invitational. Augusta will tee off at 12:52 p.m. (ET) beginning with Jack Vajda and concluding with Ben van Wyk at 1:48 p.m. (ET). The Jaguars and their playing partners will be teeing off on hole No. 11 to start their rounds. Live coverage of the second round will begin on the Golf Channel at 4:30 p.m. (ET) and will run until 7:30 p.m. (ET).
