Augusta Dominates MEAC Championship For Fifth Straight Title

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Augusta University men's golf team won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship for the fifth time in school history on Tuesday at Crosswinds Golf Club. Augusta finished the event 22-under-par to win the tournament. AU freshman Alex van Wyk was voted the Most Outstanding Performer, while head coach Jack O'Keefe earned the Most Outstanding Coach award.

 

 

With the conference championship, Augusta received an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship and will compete in the NCAA Regional May 13-15. The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Selection Show will air live on Wednesday, May 1 at 9:00 p.m. on Golf Channel.

 

Augusta beat Bethune-Cookman by 22 strokes for the top spot on the team leaderboard at the MEAC finals. BCU took second (E), Savannah State third (+31), North Carolina A&T fourth (+58), Maryland Eastern Shore fifth (+112), and North Carolina Central sixth (+151).

 

AU freshman Alex van Wyk shot 70 (-2), 68 (-4), and 71 (-1) to finish the tournament 7-under-par and win the event. Winning his first collegiate tournament, van Wyk was named the Most Outstanding Performer for claiming the individual MEAC title.

 

Jags junior Gustav Andersson fired AU's lowest round of the week with a 5-under 67 in round three and took second overall (-5). Bethune-Cookman's Jake Lane snagged third place at 4-under-par, while AU sophomore Alex Shead and senior Adam Walden took fourth and fifth. Shead ended three shots under par and Walden two shots under par. Augusta freshman Viktor Lindgren tied for seventh at 3-over.

 

Augusta head coach Jack O'Keefe was named the MEAC's Most Outstanding Coach for the fifth straight year. The Jaguars recorded 59 birdies on the week to win their second tournament this season.
