Shead Ties AU Single Round Record At Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Augusta University men's golf team finished tied for ninth with Oregon State at 7-under-par after three rounds in three days at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Course. Sophomore Alex Shead shot a 64 (-6) for the Jags on Sunday to tie the single round record and finish tied for 12th overall.

 

 

Back at the Maui Jim for the third straight season, Augusta sent junior Gustav Andersson, sophomores Alex Shead, Laken Hinton, and Olof Gunnarsson, and freshman Alex van Wyk.

 

The event was hosted by Georgia State on the par-70, 7,081-yard course and featured Arizona State, Auburn, Augusta, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Houston, Kansas State, Kent State, LSU, Minnesota, NC State, Oregon and Oregon State. Georgia Tech took down Arizona State to win the team title 28-under. Arizona State took second two shots behind GT, while LSU snagged third (-23), NC State fourth (-21), and Auburn fifth (-19).

 

The Jaguars were in fourth place after round one, but fell to a tie for 10th upon completing 36 holes. Teeing off on Sunday with Houston and Kansas State, Augusta improved by one spot led by Shead who took for 12th (-7). Shead shot 68 (-2), 71 (+1), and 64 (-6). He started on the back nine and birdied No. 10, 11, and 14-16. A final birdie on No. 8 and no bogeys sealed him the record round. He joins Broc Everett (2015-16), Emmett Tuner (2004-05), Oliver Wilson (2002-03), and Jamie Miller (2005-06) as the only other Jags to shoot 64 in a tournament.

 

Andersson shot 68 in round one and posted a career-low 67 (-3) on Saturday. He finished tied for 35th after a round-three 75. Hinton also fired a personal best round with a 66 to open the event on Friday and ended up taking a T39. van Wyk tied for 61st with back-to-back rounds at even par and Gunnarsson tied for 65th.

 

AU plays at the at Alister MacKenzie Invitational Oct. 8-9, hosted by Cal-Berkeley, at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
