Jags Begin 2018 Season At Southwestern Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The Augusta University men's golf team competed at the Southwestern Invitational on Feb. 26-27 to start the 2018 season and finished in 13th place at North Ranch Country Club.

 

 

In a week of wild weather with high winds, frost, rain, and hail, the tournament started on Monday after a two hour delay. The 15-team field was scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday, but were forced to postpone the second round on the par-72, 6,994-yard course.

 

No. 22 UCLA had a huge lead after day one and held on to win the tournament 8-under par. Host Pepperdine sealed second (+12), Tennessee third (+25), San Diego State fourth (+29), and UC Davis and SMU tied for fifth for the top finishing teams.

 

Augusta sent four freshmen and senior Broc Everett. AU went with rookies Constantin Unger, Olof Gunnarsson, Alex Shead, and Laken Hinton. AU shot 309 (+21) in round one and followed it with a 302 (+14) to sit in 13th with one more round to go. The team posted an 18-over 306 on Tuesday to remain 13th.

 

Everett shot even par in his final round to get to 10-over for the week and finish tied for 30th to lead the Jaguars. Hinton tied for 33rd (+11), Gunnarsson 43rd (+14), Shead 56th (+19), and Unger 66th (+22).

 

The Jaguars head across the Savannah River March 5-6 to the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by USC Aiken, at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
