SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Augusta University men's golf team steadily climbed the leaderboard and finished ninth in the inaugural Maui Jim Invitational on Sunday at Mirabel Golf Club. Augusta finished seven shots over par in the 16-team field in Georgia State's event.
The field teed off on Friday for the opening 18 holes on the par 71, 7,147 yard course. Kent State had a five stroke lead heading into Saturday, but LSU jumped ahead by two shots after round two. LSU finished 41 strokes below par to win, while Baylor was the next best team at 36-under par. Kent State (-24) placed third, Kansas (-15) fourth, and South Carolina (-13) rounded up the top five teams.
After round one, the Jaguars were in a three-way tie for 13th with Hawaii and South Florida. Augusta dropped seven strokes and climbed from 13th to 10th entering the final round.
Senior Emmanuel Kountakis was the lone Jaguar inside the top 20 and ended two-under par to finish tied for 18th. Kountakis fired a round-two 68 (-3) and 70 (-1) to earn the top finish for Augusta.
Junior Broc Everett turned in a 71 (-1) on Sunday to place in a tie for 23rd after a round-one 68 (-3) highlighted his weekend. Senior Jake Marriott and junior Ryan Johnson both tied for 61st (+9) and senior Cooper Brown ended in a tie for 79th.
The field included UAB, Augusta, Baylor, Cal, Chattanooga, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Houston, Kansas, Kent State, LSU, Notre Dame, South Carolina and South Florida.
