Jake Marriott Wins The Invitational at The Ocean Course

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Jaguar senior Jake Marriott started the 2016-17 season with a first-place victory in The Invitational at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Jaguars finished tied for fifth one-under par in the two-day event on The Ocean Course, one of five historic courses at Kiawah Resort for College of Charleston's home event.

A 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday commenced play on the par-72, 7,115-yard course. Jaguar senior Jake Marriott was tied for the lead with Georgia State's Alexander Hermann after 36 holes in the 92-man field.

A one-over 73 was good enough for Marriott and finished him nine under to win the event. Marriott's first collegiate win was sparked by a 66 (-6) and 68 (-4) in his first two rounds.

Ranked No. 29 in the nation on Golfstat.com, Augusta was tied for fifth after round one and remained there until the conclusion of 54 holes. Middle Tennessee State (-14) pulled out the win, Mississippi (-8) placed second, Maryland (-5) third, Georgia Southern (-4) fourth, and Augusta and host institution College of Charleston tied for fifth out of 15 teams.

Senior Emmanuel Kountakis had the next best Augusta finish with a tie for 11th two-under par – his lowest regular-season finish as a Jaguar. Junior Broc Everett tied for 33rd (+2), and in their Jaguar debuts, freshman Gustav Andersson finished 75th (+13) and junior-transfer Ryan Johnson 78th (+14).

The Jags head to Scottsdale, Ariz., Sept. 23-25 for the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club.

TOURNAMENT NOTES

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort has played host to the 2007 Senior PGA and 2012 PGA Championships. It will also host the 2021 PGA Championship. The Ocean Course is only the fourth course to host each of the PGA of America's major championships. Probably no other golf course in the world outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by the wind. Located on the eastern-most end of Kiawah Island, The Ocean Course has more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere. College of Charleston senior William Rainey is the defending individual champion shooting 5-under par during the 2015 edition of the tournament. Georgia Southern is the defending team champion firing a three-round score of 873 (+9) ahead of last year's runner-up CofC (+13).
