BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Augusta University 2016 senior Robin Petersson is tied for second at the 116th U.S. Amateur Championship after he fired a five-under 65 in round one on Monday afternoon at Oakland Hills Country Club.
The top 64 golfers after two rounds advance to match play. The event continues August 16-21.
Starting on the 10th hole of the 6829-yard North Course, the Augusta golfer and European Palmer Cup team member caught fire with six-straight birdies starting at the 18th hole and continuing through the fifth on the front nine.
Dawson Armstrong leads the field with a 64 (-4) after the opening 18 holes.
Petersson is tied with Alex Smalley and Gavin Hall through the first round. Other early scores posted by the 312 competitors include a 66 on the North by Ben Schlottman of North Carolina and Sam Horsfield of Florida, and a 67 on the South by Nick Carlson of Michigan.
Also representing the Jaguars is rising junior Broc Everett and rising senior Jake Marriott. Marriott also competed on the North Course and shot an even-par 70 to sit in a tie for 50th. Everett sits one over par with a 71 and is in a tie for 86th.

TOURNAMENT PREVIEW:
Beginning Monday Oakland Hills Country Club is set to host the 116th playing of the U.S. Amateur. The field will include 312 golfers representing 46 states and 29 countries.
Monday and Tuesday play will include 18-holes of stroke play qualifying with the top 64 advancing to match play starting Wednesday. Match play will continue through Sunday when the 36-hole championship match will be held.
