SAVANNAH, Ga., - Augusta University senior Robin Petersson and junior Jake Marriott are tied for first place after the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship on Friday afternoon at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah, Ga. The No. 30 Augusta Jaguars are in first place four-under par and lead the seven-team field by three strokes.
The championship features Augusta University, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Hampton, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central and Savannah State. The winner receives an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.
Augusta joined the MEAC as an associate member for men's golf on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The Jags sent seniors Maverick Antcliff and Robin Petersson, juniors Jake Marriott and Emmanuel Kountakis, and sophomore Broc Everett as their starting five for the MEAC.
The Jaguars sit in first place on the par-72 course. Bethune-Cookman is in second after 18 holes one-under par, Florida A&M is third (+11), Savannah State fourth (+19), North Carolina Central fifth (+20), Maryland Eastern Shore sixth (+30), and Hampton seventh (+48).
Petersson and Marriott paced the entire field and each fired back-to-back 69 (-3). Petersson had six birdies in round one and Marriott three to guide the Jags,
Kountakis holds on to a tie for fourth place with an even-par 72 and Everett is knotted in 11th two-over par with a 74 (+2). Antcliff is three shots above par and is tied for 15th with a 75 (+3) in his opening round.
Round two begins tomorrow on Friday, April 22 with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m.
