Augusta Sits Sixth At Southwestern Jones Invitational To Begin 2016

Jaguars open 2016 season in Malibu, Calif., at Pepperdine University

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The 2016 season began for the Augusta Jaguars at the Southwestern Jones Invitational on Monday afternoon and the Jags are in sixth place at 14-over par after 36 holes at North Ranch Country Club.

Along with the Jaguars, the 15-team field includes host Pepperdine, Boise State, BYU, Fresno State, Iowa, Lipscomb, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Oregon, Sam Houston State, San Diego, San Diego State, USC, and Winthrop. Six of the 15 teams are ranked in the top 50 in the nation.

Teams played 36 holes in a shotgun format for rounds one and two on the par-72, 6,992-yard course and No. 6 Southern California leads at 24 shots below par. No. 42 Pepperdine is 13 shots behind in second place at -11, while No. 20 San Diego State is third, No. 27 Oregon fourth, and Fresno State fifth.

Augusta was 10-over par after the opening 18 holes and in eighth place, but shaved six strokes from their team score to finish 14-over-par after round two in sixth place and one stroke out of fifth.

Jaguar seniors Robin Petersson and Maverick Antcliff each shot 71 (-1) in the first round and Antcliff shot one-under par again in round two to lead the Jags in 10th place (-2). Petersson's round-two 74 (+2) put him in a tie for 16th. Antcliff had six birdies on the day and Petersson seven.

Junior Jake Marriott is tied for 20th two shots over par with a 75 (+3) and 71 (-1) in rounds one and two. Juniors Viktor Edin and Cooper Brown rounded out the Augusta starting five with Edin tied for 69th 13-over par and Brown tied for 75th (+15).,

The final 18 holes concludes the event on Tuesday, March 1 with tee beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The Southwestern Jones Invitational combines two previously existing tournaments, the Southwestern Intercollegiate (started by USC in 1978) and the Jones Invitational (hosted by Pepperdine the last two years).
