GRU Augusta books five fall tournaments and six spring events for upcoming season
AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta men's golf Head Coach Jack O'Keefe announced the full competition slate for the Jaguars in the upcoming 2015-16 schedule on Thursday afternoon.
Spanning both the upcoming fall and spring, the new slate features a total of 11 regular-season events with five in the fall and six in the spring – highlighted by the Jags' home event, the 3M Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club from April 2-3, 2016.
"We have another great schedule for the upcoming season and it may truly be one of the best in the country," O'Keefe said. "We start out the year at Olympia Fields Country Club and also play in the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational at Isleworth Country Club, and those are two of the best tournaments in the fall. It should be an exciting year and I really like our schedule as we have a very experienced team with eight upper classmen. I am ready to get started."
The Jags open the season in a three-day event at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia County Club – the host site of the 2015 U.S. Amateur in Olympia Fields, Ill. GRU heads to Birmingham, Ala., for the Graeme McDowell Shoal Creek Invitational on Sept. 28-29 in Birmingham, Ala., before moving to Raleigh, N.C. for the NC State Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Oct. 5-6.
The team returns to the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 18-20 at the Isleworth Country Club in Windermere, Fla., and to the Wendy's Kiawah Classic from Nov. 1-3 at the Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C. Last season the Jags placed 10th of 15 at the Tavistock and tied for fifth out of 20 at the Kiawah Classic.
GRU Augusta kicks off the spring on the west coast at the Southwestern Jones Invitational, hosted by Pepperdine University in Somis, Calif., about an hour outside of Los Angeles. The Jags will compete in a two-day event on Feb. 29-March 1 before returning to the CSRA for the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by USC Aiken at the Palmetto Golf Club on March 7-8. GRU finish fifth last season.
Staying in the state, GRU competes in the Linger Longer, hosted by Kennesaw State and Mercer, from March 20-22 at the Great Waters Reynolds Plantation in Eatonton, Ga.
GRU Augusta remains at home and competes in their 38th-annual event, the 3M Augusta Invitational, sponsored by the Augusta Golf Association on April 2-3 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The team makes one more regular-season trek before winding down the season near home at the Perry Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla., on April 16-17 at the Dornick Hills Country Club.
"Luckily, we are close to home for most of the spring, except for a new event in Ardmore, Okla., the Perry Maxwell," O'Keefe said. "The Perry Maxwell has a unique format in which all five players from each school will play together as a quintet for the first day of 36 holes in the tournament."
The Jags compete at the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Golf Tournament Championships on April 21-23 at the Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah, Ga. The winner receives an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.
Six sites have been chosen for the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regionals taking place May 16-18 at the Ol' Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz., the Blackwolf Run Meadow Valley Course in Kohler, Wis., the Championship Course at UNM in Albuquerque, N.M., the Karsten Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., and the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn.
The 2016 Division I Men's Golf Championship will be held May 27-June 1 at the Eugene Country club in Eugene, Ore.
