GRU Augusta Golf Camp Sees Record High Numbers

Running from June 2-5 for boys and girls from ages 6-18, golf camp featured instruction from Jaguar Men's Golf head coach Jack O'Keefe and women's head coach Kory Thompson, along with guidance from former and current GRU Augusta golfers. Campers gained the experience of practicing and learning at a top NCAA Division I facility, while also getting the chance to play at the Jaguars' home course at Forest Hills Golf Club

"The camp for our golf program gives the kids a chance to hit golf balls, get them introduced to the game and gives the more advanced kids a chance to become a potential recruit in the future," O'Keefe said. "We covered all the different aspects within all the different age groups. We're trying to introduce the little guys to golf and make the older kids a little better through this program."

Campers were split into three groups according to age and went through all phases of the game at three different stations, focusing on full swing, chipping, pitching, bunker play, putting, wedge play, and course management. Thompson says this is the highest attended golf camp at GRU Augusta that she knowledge of and sees it getting bigger and better in the future.

"Last year I think we had about 15 campers," Thompson said. "This is the highest number I know of in the last 10 years or so and hopefully we can keep growing it every year. I know as a kid I went to golf camp and getting to play with other kids and have college kids help you out is a great way to give back. I think Augusta is a great golf community as well and there are a lot of good players here. It's a good recruiting tool."

Keep an eye out for the 2014-15 seasons for GRU Augusta's division 1 men's and women's golf programs.
