AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Former Augusta State standout
Major Manning fired a seven-under 65 Tuesday and owns a share of
the lead through one round of the PGA Tour’s final stage of Q
School in La Quinta, Calif.
Playing in one of the first groups out on the PGA West Stadium
Course, Manning carded eight birdies against a lone bogey. Manning
stood at -1 through six holes before he caught fire, recording
birdies on six of his next seven holes, including five straight. He
parred his last five holes to take the early clubhouse lead.
Former PGA Tour member Craig Kanada, along with Joey Lamielle,
matched Manning’s effort late in the day to pull into a tie
for the lead. A six-player logjam that includes 1996 PGA
Championship winner Mark Brooks is tied for fourth place at -6, one
shot off the pace.
Richard Johnson, an ASU All-American in 1995, played in the same
group with Manning and is tied for 156th after registering a
four-over 76. The Stadium Course played a half-stroke harder than
the Nicklaus (70.42 to 70.92). Fifty-three players broke par on the
Nicklaus, while 50 did the same on the Stadium layout.
A native of Daytona Beach, Fla., Manning led the NCAA Championships
as a sophomore in 2005 after the first round with a five-under 65
at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. He tied for fourth
to earn honorable-mention All-American honors and capped his
college career with his second All-America selection as a senior in
2007 while leading the Jaguars to an NCAA West Regional appearance
in Tempe, Ariz.
Manning earned his first professional victory on September 14 when
he claimed the Hooters Tour’s Capitol Chevrolet & Hyundai
Classic outside of Columbia, S.C.
The final stage of Q School is a six-day, 108-hole marathon that
features a 163-player field and includes 20 former PGA Tour winners
who have combined for 48 victories. The top 25 players and ties
after six rounds will earn their PGA Tour cards on Monday.
The final three rounds will be televised on Golf Channel beginning
Saturday, Dec. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m., and
Monday from 3:30 to 7 p.m.
