ASU's Gregory Advances In Atlanta

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Augusta State head men’s golf coach Josh Gregory won his first two rounds of match play Friday in the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship at Rivermont Golf & Country Club.

In the round of 64, Gregory won the last three holes of his morning match to eliminate Anders Albertson of Woodstock, Ga., then dispatched LaGrange’s Chad Griffith 3 & 2 in the afternoon to move on to the quarterfinals.

Defending champion Greg Bradford of Talking Rock and past champion David Noll Jr. of Dalton also advanced.

Bradford ousted Sea Island’s Jack Hall after 20 holes in his opening round match and defeated No. 17-seed Bill Leonard of Kennesaw, 1 up, in the second round. Noll, who captured the Atlanta Amateur Match Play title in 2005, posted a 4 and 2 victory over Atlanta’s Hector Cora in the morning before besting the championship’s medalist, Brandon Nelson of Roswell, in 20 holes.

Marietta’s Chris Hall defeated Dan Barkley of Roswell, 3 and 2, and Dave Sexton of Suwanee, 4 and 3, during his quarterfinal run. Billy Mitchell of Roswell, advanced with victories over Lee Dennis of Comer and Pooler’s Ryan Wilson.

Deron Hornbach of Atlanta, Chris Chuck of Roswell and Marietta’s Winston Morris will also be a part of the quarterfinal field. Hornbach, in the first round, topped Atlanta’s Jorge Cora, 2 and 1, before defeating Erik Daniels of Marietta, 6 and 4, in the round of 16. Chuck ousted 3-seeded Greg Kennedy of Duluth, 20 holes, and proceeded to defeat past champion Erik Martin of Alpharetta, 3 and 1. Morris took out Atlanta’s Keith Hadelman, 3 and 2, before dispatching Doug Stiles of Athens after 19 holes.

Quarterfinal matches get underway at 7:50 a.m. Saturday morning, with the winners advancing to the semifinals in the afternoon. The 18-hole Championship Match is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

Gregory will take on Bradford in the first quarterfinal match.

Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club. Notable former champions include Charlie Yates (1931), Tommy Barnes (1936), Dan Yates (1942), Gene Dahlbender (1946-47, 1957-59, 1962), Bobby Jones’ son, Robert T. Jones, III, (1948), Charles Harrison (1952-54, 1961, 1965, 1967-1969, 1973, 1977), Larry Mize (1979) and Danny Yates (1981-82).

Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 365 member clubs and 85,000 individual members.
