Gregory Wins Opening Match

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Augusta State men’s golf coach Josh Gregory defeated Scott Hardy Monday in the first round of match play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Milwaukee Country Club.

Gregory, who tied for 19th at four-over 144 (71-73) during the two rounds of stroke-play qualifying, turned back Hardy, the head men’s golf coach at St. Mary’s (Calif.) University, 3 and 1.

With the win, Gregory advanced to Tuesday’s Round of 32, where he will face David Noll, Jr., from Dalton, Ga., at 9:30 a.m. Eastern.

Play continues with the second- and third-round matches on Tuesday. The championship runs through Thursday’s 36-hole final, with the winner receiving a likely invitation to the 2009 Masters Tournament.

Medalist and top-seeded Skip Berkmeyer, 34, of St. Louis, Mo., safely advanced with a win against Dan Horner, 30, of Sandy, Utah, 3 and 2. Berkmeyer was the low scorer for 36 holes of stroke play at 2-under-par 138.

The U.S. Mid-Am began with a field of 264 amateur golfers who reached their 25th birthday on or before Sept. 6, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4.

The Mid-Am is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
