MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Augusta State men’s
golf coach Josh Gregory defeated Scott Hardy Monday in the first
round of match play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Milwaukee Country
Club.
Gregory, who tied for 19th at four-over 144 (71-73) during the two
rounds of stroke-play qualifying, turned back Hardy, the head
men’s golf coach at St. Mary’s (Calif.) University, 3
and 1.
With the win, Gregory advanced to Tuesday’s Round of 32,
where he will face David Noll, Jr., from Dalton, Ga., at 9:30 a.m.
Eastern.
Play continues with the second- and third-round matches on Tuesday.
The championship runs through Thursday’s 36-hole final, with
the winner receiving a likely invitation to the 2009 Masters
Tournament.
Medalist and top-seeded Skip Berkmeyer, 34, of St. Louis, Mo.,
safely advanced with a win against Dan Horner, 30, of Sandy, Utah,
3 and 2. Berkmeyer was the low scorer for 36 holes of stroke play
at 2-under-par 138.
The U.S. Mid-Am began with a field of 264 amateur golfers who
reached their 25th birthday on or before Sept. 6, and who have a
USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4.
The Mid-Am is one of 13 national championships conducted annually
by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for
amateurs.
