CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Augusta State closed
the regular season Sunday with a fifth-place finish when the second
round of the Cavalier Classic was wiped out due to inclement
weather.
Play was halted at approximately 3:30 p.m., at Birdwood Golf Course
with the delay lasting nearly two hours. Tournament officials
concluded that play wouldn’t resume until at least 5:15 p.m.,
and the teams remaining on the course would not be able to complete
play before darkness. Therefore, final results were based on
Saturday’s first round of play.
South Carolina was crowned the tournament champion based on its
two-under 286 on Saturday. The No. 13 Gamecocks claimed a six-shot
victory over host Virginia. Francis Marion was third, James Madison
finished fourth and ASU was fifth.
The 27th-ranked Jaguars booked an eight-over 296 Saturday while
sophomore Henrik Norlander paced ASU with a twounder 70 and tie for
fourth place. Junior Jake Amos posted a two-over 74 and tied for
28th. Senior Janne Kaske and sophomore Carter Newman each tied for
46th after a pair of four-over 76’s. Freshman Taylor Floyd
tied for 84th after an 81.
UNC Wilmington’s Josh Brock claimed medalist honors with his
five-under 67 in the opening round. North Carolina State’s
Adam Hogue, competing as an individual, was runnerup after a 68.
Virginia’s Kyle Stough took third after a three-under 69,
followed by Norlander, South Carolina’s George Bryan IV,
Appalachian State’s Lance Wheeler, Marshall Tinsley of George
Mason and Amory Davis of Virginia.
The Jags will learn of their postseason fate when the NCAA Division
I Men’s Golf Championship field is announced on Monday, May 4
at 6:00 p.m. Eastern
