ASU Summer Golf Notebook, Volume Eight

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State head men’s golf coach Josh Gregory posted a four-round total of one-under 279 Sunday and tied for fourth place in the Georgia Amateur Championship at Idle Hour Club in Macon, Ga.

Gregory, who finished third three weekends ago in the Palmetto Amateur in Aiken, S.C., managed a final round of two-over 72 and finished as one of five players to post an under-par total for the 72-hole event.

Augusta’s Jeff Knox matched Gregory’s total, while Macon’s Russell Henley captured the State Amateur title with a 10-under 270, including a final-round, one-under 69. Defending champion Harris English was second, just a single stroke back of Henley. Dalton’s David Noll, Jr. took third at eight-under 272. Jay Moseley of Bainbridge turned in the day’s best round, a five-under 65.

In the Players Amateur at Belfair Golf Club in Bluffton, S.C., ASU rising junior Mitch Krywulycz fired a five-under 65 Sunday. Rising sophomore Carter Newman (69-72-69-70) tallied an even-par 280 to pace three Jaguars, with recent graduate Keith Guest (73-68-73-67) and Krywulycz (73-68-75-65) posting a pair of one-over 281s.

In the pro ranks, former All-American Vaughn Taylor notched a two-under 69 Sunday in the final round of the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Taylor tied for 12th place, five shots behind Kenny Perry, who notched his third PGA Tour title in his last five starts with a playoff victory over Jay Williamson and Brad Adamonis.

Oliver Wilson registered a two-under 69 Sunday in the final round of the European Tour’s Scottish Open at Loch Lomond Golf Club in Glasgow, Scotland. With his finish, Wilson managed a seven-under 277 (71-67-71-69) and logged his ninth top-25 effort of the season.

Another ASU product, Irishman Gary Murphy, logged a 69 and improved from 31stt to 19th.

Wilson, who tied for ninth place, will join fellow former Jaguar Jamie Elson in the field for next week’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.

Former Jaguar All-American Scott Jamieson recorded his first top-20 finish on the European Challenge Tour Sunday.

Jamieson closed the Credit Suisse Challenge with a six-under 67 for a four-day total of 12-under 280 (67-72-74-67).

Another ASU product, Welshman David Park, tied for 24th at 10-under 282 (69-67-69-77).
