ASU Summer Golf Notebook, Volume Four

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State’s Mitch Krywulycz collected his biggest amateur title Sunday when fired his second straight four-under 67 and posted a five-shot victory in the 79th Southeastern Amateur at the Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ga.

A rising junior from Sylvania, Australia, Krywulycz (65-71-67-67) tallied a 72-hole total of 14-under 270. Derek Chang (71-66-70-68) and South Carolina’s George Bryan IV (73-64-71-67) tied for second at nine-under 275. Auburn’s Jay Moseley, Paul Woodbury and Wesley Bryan tied for fourth at seven-under 277. Moseley booked the low round of the day with a six-under 65.

ASU’s Carter Newman, a rising sophomore from Evans, tied for 20th at three-over 287 (67-73-75-72) after a final-round 72. Jaguar signee Taylor Floyd of Macon, Ga., tallied a one-over 72 and tied for 32nd at six-over 290 (72-72-74-72).

Krywulycz played in 10 of 12 events for the Jaguars as a sophomore in 2007-08 and was a member of the ASU lineup in both the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships. Newman played in six events for the Jags and recorded one top-five finish.

Newman tied for sixth in the Southeastern last summer while Krywulycz tied for 41st.

The Southeastern Amateur was created in 1922 by Fred Haskins and the Country Club of Columbus is a Donald-Ross design. Among the winners are Doug Sanders, Tommy Aaron, Danny Edwards, Curtis Strange, Columbus native Kenny Knox, and 5 time champion Allen Doyle. Included on the runner-up list are Mason Randolph, Gardner Dickinson, Bert Greene, Steve Melnyk, Gary Koch, Ben Crenshaw, Fuzzy Zoeller, Andy Bean, Willy Wood, and Paul Azinger.
