AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State’s Mitch Krywulycz fired a six-under 65 Thursday to grab the first-round lead in the 79th Southeastern Amateur at the Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ga.
A rising junior from Sylvania, Australia, Krywulycz owns a one-shot lead over Tim Schaetzel and is two shots clear of Bill Allcorn and Jaguar teammate Carter Newman. A rising sophomore from Evans, Newman and Allcorn each tallied four-under 67’s. Michael Green of Augusta leads a group of three players at three-under 68.
ASU signee Taylor Floyd of Macon, Ga., signed for a one-over 72 and is part of an eight-way tie for 30th.
Krywulycz played in 10 of 12 events for the Jaguars as a sophomore in 2007-08 and was a member of the ASU lineup in both the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships. Newman played in six events for the Jags and recorded one top-five finish.
Newman tied for sixth in the Southeastern last summer while Krywulycz tied for 41st.
The Southeastern Amateur was created in 1922 by Fred Haskins. W.H. Dismuke Sr., won the inaugural event. The tournament was later renamed in 1938, controversial as it was at the time, to the Southeastern Amateur. Mr. Tommy Barnes was the first to have his name inscribed on the newly named trophy.
Among the winners since that event are Doug Sanders, Tommy Aaron, Danny Edwards, Curtis Strange, Columbus native Kenny Knox, and 5 time champion Allen Doyle. Included on the runner-up list are Mason Randolph, Gardner Dickinson, Bert Greene, Steve Melnyk, Gary Koch, Ben Crenshaw, Fuzzy Zoeller, Andy Bean, Willy Wood, and Paul Azinger.
