Double Overtime Win Over Lander Secures Win 500 for Head Coach Dip Metress

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Helping Head Coach Dip Metress usher in the 500th win of his career, the Augusta University men's basketball team beat Lander on the road in double overtime.  AU moves to 7-6, 5-6 in the PBC while the Lander Bearcats fell to 6-9 overall, 5-6 in Peach Belt Play.

Tyree Myers led Augusta with 29 points and 6 assists. Tyshaun Crawford added 19 points and 7 rebounds. Lee Flenor scored 16 points off the bench for the Jags while John Whitehead III carded 10 points.

 

Lander outrebounded the Augusta 40-32 while the Jaguars forced Lander into 11 more turnovers. The visiting team scored 28 points off of those turnovers, forcing double overtime and winning 99-97.

After battling for the entire match-up, Lander hit two three-pointers with less than a minute to play and forcing the first overtime with the score tied at 80.

 

Tyshaun Crawford opened the first overtime with two made free throws. A made jump shot by Lee Flenor and a layup by Crawford put the Jags up 6 with 2:26 left in the first overtime.  A steal and layup by Myers further extended the lead to 90-82. An offensive urge led by Landers Deon Berrien led the Bearcats back to a tied game at 92, forcing a second overtime.

 

Both team were scoreless in almost three minutes of the second overtime period until John Whitehead III hit a shot from beyond the arc with 2:10 left in the game. A made three by Jared Sherfield brought the home team within two, but Augusta defeated the Bearcats 99-97 in the marathon game.

 

 

Lander was led by Jared Sherfield's 28 points and Deon Berrien's 25 points.

 

Augusta returns home this Monday, Feb 22nd for a 7:30pm PBC Match-up. All games can be viewed on the PBC Sports Network.
