John Whitehead III Leads Jaguars in Close Loss to Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – The limited Augusta University Men's basketball team dropped a Peach Belt Conference contest by a mere one point (64-63) to rival USC Aiken. The Jaguars fall to 5-3, 3-3 in PBC play while the Pacers improve to 6-3, 5-1 in PBC play.

Head Coach Dip Metress' squad was led by freshman John Whitehead III. The Augusta native put up a season-best 16 points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the final three minutes of the game. Whitehead played a near perfect game, going 5-for-6 from the field, 4-for-5 from the three point line, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

Junior Tyshaun Crawford was 6-for-11 from the field, scoring 13 points and adding 8 rebounds. Senior Shawn Moss was again integral for the Jaguars squad, scoring 12 points in his 24 minutes off the bench.

Lee Flenor led all players with 15 rebounds, including 4 offensive rebounds to accompany his 8 points.

The Jaguars held an early 9-5 lead after a dunk from Timmy Sellers with 16 minutes left to play in the first half. After allowing the Pacers to go on a small scoring run, two made free throws by Darren Lucas-White tied the game at 18. The back and forth play continued for the entirety of the contest with Lee Flenor tying the game with a jump shot with 2 seconds left in the first half.

Neither team led by more than 5 points in the second half. Sharp shooting by the visiting team put the Jaguars within one with 10 seconds to play, but Augusta eventually fell 63-64.

The Jaguars return to action Saturday when they travel to take on North Georgia at 3:30pm. 300 fans are allowed on a first come-first serve basis. All games can be viewed on the PBC Sports Network.
