Augusta Falls to Mount Olive in Season Opener

Wilson N.C. - The Augusta University Men's Basketball team opened up the 2019-2020 season with a loss against the Mount Olive Trojans at the 45 Second Classic (hosted by Barton).

The Jags were behind 39-34 at halftime and were outscored 49-48 in the second half, ultimately falling 88-82 as a final result.

As a team, the Jaguars shot 31-65 from the field for a 47.7 FG%. Mount Olive was only 25-61 from the field, but dominated in three-point plays, making 11 to the Jaguars' two. The Trojan's also beat the Jaguars in free throws, sinking 27 of 35 to the Jags 18 of 27. One of Augusta's downfalls in the contest was their inability to convert on turnovers. The Jags could only muster seven points off of Mount Olive's 13 turnovers. In comparison, The Trojans picked up 24 points off of Augusta's 19 turnovers.  

Leading the way for Augusta was Rafael Monteiro who made 10 of 15 field goals and all four of his free-throws for 24 points on the night. Monteiro also picked up a double-double, notching a team high 11 rebounds in the game. Following just behind Monteiro in scoring was Troy Cracknell, who picked up 16 point on the night going 7 for 12 from the field, including sinking one of Augusta's two three-pointers in the match up. Tyree Myers led the way in assists, dishing out nine on the night, while also managing 10 points from the field.

Augusta continues with the 45 Second Classic when they take on hosts Barton tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
