No. 24 Augusta Set To Host Peach Belt Conference Tournament March 9-10

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The nationally-ranked and top-seeded Augusta University men's basketball team will host the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championships March 9-10 at Christenberry Fieldhouse for the seventh time in school history.

 

 

With an 89-65 quarterfinal win over Columbus State on Wednesday night, Augusta (24-5) pushed its win streak to 11 and advanced to the PBC Tournament Semifinal to face off against UNC Pembroke (21-8) on Saturday, March 9 at 5:00 p.m.

 

The Jaguars host two women's and men's semifinal games on Saturday and host the women's and men's conference championship games on Sunday. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday For the women's semifinal games on Saturday, top-seeded North Georgia hosts fourth-seeded Clayton State at 12:00 p.m. and second-seeded Lander hosts sixth-seeded Columbus State at 2:30 p.m. After the women's games on Saturday, Augusta hosts the fourth-seeded UNCP Braves for the first men's semifinal game at 5:00 p.m. in the Berry, followed by second seed USC Aiken against Francis Marion at 7:30 p.m.

 

General admission tickets for the quarterfinal game are available at the door for $10. The cost is $5 for all military, senior citizens, and children under 12. All PBC Sports Passes and students with a valid ID from a PBC school are admitted free.

 

The NCAA announced that the Jaguars sit No. 24 in the nation in the current NABC poll and No. 15 in the D2SIDA poll. AU also climbed past USC Aiken in the NCAA Southeast Regional rankings for the No. 2 spot behind Queens. The Jags split the regular-season meetings with UNC Pembroke, falling at home 93-88 on Jan. 16, before beating the Braves on their home court in a 72-69 win on Feb. 13. AU is 12-2 at home this season

 

About Augusta Men's Basketball

The Augusta University men's basketball team is led by head coach Dip Metress. On May 10, 2004, Metress was introduced as the fifth head coach in program history. He previously led the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (1996-04) and was an assistant for the Jaguars under Clint Bryant (1989-95). He has never had a losing season in his 15 seasons at the helm of the Jaguars. A two-time Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Metress and the Jags hosted five straight NCAA Regional Tournaments from 2007-11 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight three seasons in a row. He was named the South Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2007, the Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009, and the NABC Southeast District Coach of the Year in 2011.

 

Augusta men's hoops has retired four numbers in its 52-year history: Ben Madgen (1), Keshun Sherrill (10), Tyrekus 'AJ' Bowman (23), and Keenan Mann (32). The Jaguars have reached the NCAA tournament 11 times and won their region three times.
