Jags Crush Columbus State 89-65 In PBC Tournament Quarterfinal

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The top-seeded Augusta University men's basketball team won its 11th consecutive game on Wednesday night in an 89-65 victory over eighth seeded Columbus State in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal game in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Ranked No. 24 in the nation and second in the NCAA Southeast Region, the Jaguars let CSU enjoy a 7-2 run to start the game, but quickly took over from there. Senior Deane Williams scored a game-high 26 points and had seven rounds, two assists, and a block and steal. After making four three pointers all season on 18 attempts, Williams went 4-for-4 from the three-point line. Jags junior Rafael Monteiro scored 20 points with nine rebounds and freshman Miguel Arnold carded 15 on five three pointers.

 

After CSU's early run, AU got a three pointer from Williams to eventually take an 8-7 lead. Augusta used an 8-0 run to steal the score, with sophomore Troy Cracknell coming off the bench to score a fast five points.

 

Each team matched 13-for-28 shooting from the floor in the first half, but AU took a 36-32 lead into halftime. Augusta never gave up its lead and blew it open for an 89-65 final. Arnold drilled three fast three pointers in the closing minutes, as the Jags outscored the Cougars by 20 in the second half.

 

Augusta will host the PBC Tournament semifinals and championships Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10 in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jags host two women's and men's semifinal games on Saturday and host the women's and men's conference championship game on Sunday, March 10. Full brackets and times will be available soon.
