Top-Seeded Augusta Hosts Columbus State In PBC Tournament Quarterfinal March 6

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The top-seeded Augusta University men's basketball team will host eighth seeded Columbus State in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Augusta (23-5, 19-3 PBC) vs. Columbus State (13-15, 8-14 PBC)

 

General admission tickets for the quarterfinal game are available at the door for $10. The cost is $5 for all military, senior citizens, and children under 12. All PBC Sports Passes and students with a valid ID from a PBC school are admitted free.

 

The tournament begins this Wednesday, March 6, with quarterfinal games hosted on the campus of the higher seed. The four remaining teams will then join the four remaining women's teams at the site of the highest remaining men's seed. Semifinals at that site will be on Saturday, March 9, with the championship game on Sunday, March 10.

 

The Jaguars are ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Southeast Region and finished the regular season on a 10-game win streak to post a 23-5 overall record and win the PBC Championship. AU is averaging 82.7 points per game and enters the postseason 11-2 at home in the Berry. Augusta was co-division champions in the 2016-17 PBC season, but this is the first outright title since 2011.

 

The Jags have won the PBC Championship seven times overall and six times under head coach Dip Metress. Metress has never missed a trip to the Peach Belt Tournament in his 15 seasons at the helm of the program. Hosting the event for the seventh time in school history, Augusta seeks its fifth tournament title and it's third for Metress. The Jags sport a 30-23 record all time in the event.

 

Augusta swept the regular-season meetings with Columbus State, downing the Cougars 65-52 on the road Jan. 12 and winning 87-68 at home on Feb. 9.

About Augusta Men's Basketball

The Augusta University men's basketball team is led by head coach Dip Metress. On May 10, 2004, Metress was introduced as the fifth head coach in program history. He previously led the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (1996-04) and was an assistant for the Jaguars under Clint Bryant (1989-95). He has never had a losing season in his 15 seasons at the helm of the Jaguars. A two-time Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Metress and the Jags hosted five straight NCAA Regional Tournaments from 2007-11 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight three seasons in a row. He was named the South Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2007, the Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009, and the NABC Southeast District Coach of the Year in 2011.

 

Augusta men's hoops has retired four numbers in its 52-year history: Ben Madgen (1), Keshun Sherrill (10), Tyrekus 'AJ' Bowman (23), and Keenan Mann (32). The Jaguars have reached the NCAA tournament 11 times and won their region three times.
