Augusta Wins 10th Straight To Clinch PBC Conference Championship

GREENWOOD, S.C. – For the seventh time in school history, the Augusta University men's basketball team claimed the Peach Belt Conference Championship after winning its 10th straight game in an 87-67 road victory at Lander on Saturday afternoon to end the regular-season.

Currently ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Southeast Region, the Jaguars won the 2019 PBC Championship with a 23-5 record. Augusta will be the first seed in the conference tournament after USC Aiken fell today at Young Harris.

 

Augusta won its first PBC regular season championship in 1998-99, before current head coach Dip Metress showed up for the 2004-05 season and won four in the next seven years. Metress has won the PBC Championship six times and this is the second time in three years.

 

AU senior Deane Williams delivered his 11th double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Troy Cracknell came off the bench for the second straight game and hit four three pointers to card 16 points, freshman Miguel Arnold scored 15, and junior Rafael Monteiro scored 14 with five rebounds.

 

Augusta hosts the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Opponents and times are to be announced once regular-season games conclude on Sunday, March 3. The quarterfinal games are hosted on the campus of the higher seed. The final four men's and women's teams will then advance to the semifinals and finals, March 9-10, at the site of the highest-remaining men's seed.
