Jags Win Seven In A Row With 75-70 Victory Over Francis Marion

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team hosted a Peach Belt Conference game against the Francis Marion Patriots on Wednesday night and won 75-70 in Christenberry Fieldhouse for the seventh consecutive victory. With the win, the Jaguars reached 20 wins for the 16th time in school history and the ninth time under current head coach Dip Metress.

Senior Deane Williams had 13 first-half points and finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the year and his fourth in a row. Jaguar junior Rafael Monteiro added 15 points with four boards and senior Tyvez Monroe delivered 14 points and five rebounds.

 

FMU hit the opening basket of the night, but found themselves tied with AU 10-10 at the 13:55 mark in the first half. Augusta went on a small 7-2 run to take control of the scoreboard. Monroe nailed a three-point attempt to put AU up 24-16 and Augusta held the lead into halftime leading 43-37 at the break.

 

With 10 minutes to go in the game, Augusta was up 56-51. Francis Marion made it a one-point game with 6:40 on the clock, but AU got a fast-break layup from Monteiro and a corner three from Monroe to push the Jags back ahead. Leading by three with under four minutes in regulation, the Jags stayed ahead and carried a 73-70 advantage to the 15 second mark. The Jaguars scored six points to FMU's four in the final moments to hold on for the victory.

 

The Jaguars host the 2019 Homecoming and Senior Day games in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 23 against Georgia Southwestern. The women's game tips off at 1:30 p.m. and the men follow at 3:30 p.m. for the final regular-season doubleheader of the season.
