Strong Second Half Sends Jags Past Columbus State, 65-52

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team outscored the Columbus State Cougars 45-28 in the second half to win 65-52 Saturday afternoon in the Lumpkin Center. It is the third straight victory for the Jaguars.

After only scoring 20 points in the first 20 minutes of the game, the Jags came out of the halftime locker room composed to blow by the Cougars on their home floor. Jags junior Rafael Monteiro led the squad with 20 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Miguel Arnold hit three shots from the three-point line and totaled 14 points, while senior Tyvez Monroe scored 10 with six rebounds.

 

AU hit five more three pointers than the Cougars, as CSU shot 15.8 percent from the arc. The Jaguars also grabbed nine more rebounds than Columbus State and led by as much as 16 in the win. CSU outscored Augusta 14-6 in points off turnovers, but the Jags scored 16 second-chance baskets to the Cougars' five.

 

Augusta hosts UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse. AU stays home to play North Georgia (Jan. 19), Young Harris (Jan. 21), and USC Aiken (Jan. 30).
