Augusta Returns To 45 Second Classic To Tip The Season For Third Straight Year

WILSON, N.C. – The Augusta University men's basketball team tips off the 2018-19 season for the third consecutive season at the 45-Second Classic, a non-conference two-day tournament Nov. 9-10 on the campus of Barton College in Wilson, N.C. The Jaguars play Mount Olive on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and face Barton on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.

The Jaguars are 4-0 in the last two seasons against Mount Olive and Barton in the event. This year's field includes Augusta, UMO, Barton, and Georgia Southwestern. Barton will host Georgia Southwestern on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Augusta on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Mount Olive will take on Augusta (Friday at 5:00 p.m.) and Georgia Southwestern (Saturday at 11:00 a.m.) in the other two games of the classic in back-to-back doubleheaders.

 

Augusta is coming off a monumental upset – 77-72 over South Carolina – in an exhibition on Friday, October 26, in Columbia, S.C. Augusta, a long-time NCAA Division II powerhouse, was picked third in the 2018-19 Peach Belt Preseason Head Coaches Poll.  

 

Going 16-13 overall last season and 13-9 in conference play, Augusta returns three of its top five scorers from last year including senior preseason All-PBC selection Deane Williams who was second on the team in scoring (13.1 ppg) and led the squad in rebounding (8.1 rpg). The Jaguars are led by 15-year head coach Dip Metress, who has 310 victories at the helm of the program. The Jags, who signed six new student-athletes and returned seven from 2017-18, were picked third in the PBC preseason poll.
