Late Layup Lifts Jags Past Paine, 64-62

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team played against rival Paine College on Saturday night in The HEAL Complex. Augusta freshman Tyree Myers hit a contested layup with under 10 seconds left in the game to win a 64-62 non-conference game.

The Jaguars are now 19-3 against Paine College since the 1999-00 season and are 16-1 with head coach Dip Metress at the helm of the team.

 

Each team had three players score in double figures, with Augusta senior Tyvez Monore scoring 15 points with four rebounds, junior Rafael Monteiro 14 points and 11 rebounds, and senior Deane Williams 12 points and nine rebounds. Despite PC shooting 39.2 percent to AU's 37.3 percent from field-goal range, AU outrebounded the Lions 40-35 to help gain the edge.

 

Paine rolled to a 13-2 run to start the game with the home court fans coming alive early. Augusta went on a run and trailed 26-24 after a big block from Williams in front of the Jaguar fans in the end-zone bleachers. The Jaguars took their first lead of the night at the 6:02 mark in the first half when Monroe made a three pointer to lift the team up 27-26. Monroe followed it with another three ball as AU led 32-37 with just under four minutes until halftime. Augusta enjoyed a 35-16 run over the last 16 minutes of the first half and led 37-29 at halftime.

 

Teams exchanged three pointers to open the second half and Paine clawed back into it down by five points with 15 minutes left in the game. PC went on a 13-6 run to bring the game close and they tied it at 45-all on a three pointer with 11:12 on the clock. With under five minutes to go, AU only had a 56-55 advantage. PC hit another trey to tie the game at 58-all, but Williams got an offensive rebound in the paint and put it back to keep the Jags up by a basket.

 

All square at 60 points with 1:40 remaining, Augusta and Paine battled down to the final seconds. AU freshman Tyree Myers found a sprinting Williams on a fast break and he converted for the go-ahead layup to make it 62-60. After PC made two free throws with under 30 seconds, Myers made kissed in a wild layup in the paint to lift Augusta to a 64-62 score.

 

The Jaguars host the first basketball doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 21 vs. Benedict College in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game follows at 7:30 p.m.
