Deane Williams Named Preseason All-Conference

AUGUSTA, Ga. – With the start of the 2018-19 season just around the corner, the Peach Belt Conference has announced the men's basketball Preseason All-Conference team and Augusta University senior Deane Williams was honored on the list. The five players on the team represent five different PBC institutions and were selected by the league's head coaches.

 

Williams joins Doniel Dean (USC Aiken), Akia Pruitt (UNC Pembroke), R.J. Sessions (Georgia Southwestern), and Jaylen Taylor (Clayton State) to make up the 2018-19 preseason squad.

 

Williams, a senior forward from Bristol, England, ranked fifth in the PBC in rebounding with 8.1 per game in 2017-18 and also was eighth in the conference in field goal percentage. He was second on the team with 13.0 points per game and led the squad in blocks, rebounds and free throws.

 

Williams had 22 games in double-figure points with 10 double-doubles (tied for league lead) and scored 20 or more four times. He hit 10-of-11 field goals against North Georgia on Dec. 19, tied for the highest single-game field goal percentage in the PBC last season.

 

Augusta is fresh off a 77-72 exhibition-game victory over South Carolina on Oct. 26 in Columbia, S.C. The Jaguars tip off the season officially on Nov. 9-10 at the 45-Second Classic in Wilson, N.C., to face Mount Olive and Barton College.

About Augusta Men's Basketball

The Augusta University men's basketball team is led by head coach Dip Metress. On May 10, 2004, Metress was introduced as the fifth head coach in program history. He previously led the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (1996-04) and was an assistant for the Jaguars under Clint Bryant (1989-95). He has never had a losing season in his 14 seasons at the helm of the Jaguars. A two-time Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Metress and the Jags hosted five straight NCAA Regional Tournaments from 2007-11 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight three seasons in a row. He was named the South Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2007, the Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009, and the NABC Southeast District Coach of the Year in 2011.

 

Augusta men's hoops has retired four numbers in its 52-year history: Ben Madgen (1), Keshun Sherrill (10), Tyrekus 'AJ' Bowman (23), and Keenan Mann (32). The Jaguars have reached the NCAA tournament 11 times and won their region three times.
