Augusta To Host Rival USC Aiken Feb. 28 In Peach Belt Conference Quarterfinal Game

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and will host No. 5 USC Aiken in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse to begin the postseason.

 

 

General admission tickets for the quarterfinal game are available at the door for $5. The cost is $3 for all Augusta University faculty and staff, all military, senior citizens, and children over three years old. All PBC Sports Passes and students with a valid ID from a PBC school are admitted free. The first 50 AU faculty and staff to show their ID at the main ticket booth of Christenberry Fieldhouse will get in free of charge! 

 

The top eight teams advance to the quarterfinals which are hosted by the top four seeds. The final four teams travel to the highest remaining seed for the semifinals and finals on Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4.

 

The Jaguars swept USC Aiken in the regular season and are on an 8-0 run against their rival team from across the Savannah River. Augusta avoided entering a tiebreaker as they downed Lander, 87-74, in the regular-season finale.

 

AU head coach Dip Metress has never missed a trip to the Peach Belt Tournament in his 14 seasons at the helm of the program. Metress is 15-12 in the PBC tournament and seeks his third tourney title.

 

Clayton State is the No. 1 seed in the tournament following Saturday's 84-67 win at Columbus State. The Lakers and UNC Pembroke finished the year tied with 19-3 conference records and are PBC co-Champions for the regular season. Clayton State takes the No. 1 seed after applying the PBC tiebreaker.

 

UNC Pembroke split their two meetings with FMU this season, while Clayton State swept the Patriots to take the top seed.  Second-seeded UNCP, the defending tournament champions, will meet seventh-seeded Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday. GSW and Columbus State finished in a tie at 9-13 after the Hurricanes beat North Georgia on the road on Saturday.  GSW swept the season series from Columbus State and take the No. 7 seed.

 

Francis Marion avoided any tiebreak entanglements on Saturday with their win over Georgia College to lock down the No. 3 seed. The Patriots will meet sixth-seeded North Georgia on Wednesday in Florence.
