Augusta Beats USC Aiken 80-75 To Sweep Regular-Season Series

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Riding a 7-0 run against rival USC Aiken, the Augusta University men's basketball team hosted the Pacers on Wednesday night in a Peach Belt Conference contest in Christenberry Fieldhouse and won 80-75 to push the win streak to eight.

 

The PBC game moved Augusta to 15-12 overall and 12-9 in the league, while USC Aiken is now 14-11 and 11-10 in the league.

 

The Jaguars will celebrate 2018 Senior Day this Saturday, Feb. 24 during their Peach Belt Conference game against the Lander Bearcats. Augusta tips off at 1:30 p.m. for its final regular-season game in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jags will honor seniors from women's and men's basketball, cheerleading, and pep band in between the women's and men's game.

 

AUGUSTA SHOOTING

  • 52.0 field-goal percentage (26-for-50)
  • 40.0 three-point percentage (4-for-10)
  • 72.7 free-throw percentage (24-for-33)

 

USC AIKEN SHOOTING

  • 37.5 field-goal percentage (21-for-56)
  • 21.4 three-point percentage (6-for-28)
  • 77.1 free-throw percentage (27-for-35)

 

Augusta senior Tamyrik Fields and junior Aaron Byrd each had double-figure points at halftime. Fields finished with 26 points to lead all scorers and Byrd posted 19. Senior Vlad Cobzaru grabbed 10 rebounds and scored nine points, while sophomore Mikkel Kolstad logged 10 points with rebounds.

 

Augusta dominated the Pacers in the paint and won the rebound battle 40-29, but they doubled USCA's turnovers with 18 and the Pacers scored 23 points off those mistakes. Despite the close contest, the score only changed twice.

 

AU went into the half up 46-37, with Byrd and Fields leading the team in double-figure points.

 

At the 5:00 mark on the clock, USCA hit a three in the corner to bring them within one point in a 66-65 game. The second half was a one-possession game for almost the entire 20 minutes of action, but Augusta survived for a five-point win.
