Jags Win Fifth Straight With 82-80 Double Overtime Win At Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Looking for their fifth consecutive win, the Augusta University men's basketball team played a Peach Belt Conference contest at Columbus State University on Saturday afternoon and pulled out an 82-80 victory in double overtime.

 

The Jaguars (13-8, 10-5 PBC) were tied with Columbus State (6-12, 6-9 PBC) at 64-64 to go into overtime and survived in double OT in the final seconds.

COLUMBUS STATE SHOOTING

  • 36.6 field-goal percentage (26-for-71)
  • 33.3 three-point percentage (12-for-36)
  • 72.7 free-throw percentage (16-for-22)

 

Junior Deane Williams and senior Tamyrik Fields paced Augusta. Williams had 18 points with 11 rebounds and Fields scored 17 with five boards. Junior Tyvez Monroe scored 15 with nine rebounds, while senior Kyle Doyle also grabbed nine rebounds with eight points.

 

Augusta dominated the paint and outrebounded CSU 51-39 and they had 17 second-chance points.

 

The game was close throughout both halves, with the score differential staying within 10 points. AU freshman Shawn Moss hit a three pointer with 1:22 before the half to get the Jags within seven, but CSU took the half on top 32-25.

 

With two minutes to play, the game was dead even at 58-all. Fields hit a three pointer to boost Augusta up 64-61 with 11 seconds on the clock, but the Cougars hit a layup with three seconds dwindling to force overtime. The game was tied again with 20 seconds to play in a 75-75 game and went into overtime. Each team scored 11 points in the first OT to go into double overtime and tied at 80-all, Monroe hit a pair of free throws at the charity stripe and Augusta won 82-80.

 

 

Augusta hosts the UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Feb. 7 for a 7:30 p.m. PBC tipoff in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
