Jags Grab 71-56 Road Win At Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team ended its Peach Belt Conference northern road trip on Monday afternoon with a 71-56 victory to Young Harris College in the YHC Basketball arena.

 

The Jaguars (8-7, 5-4 PBC) recovered from a three-game losing streak to beat Young Harris (4-12, 3-7 PBC) for the second time this season.

 

Senior Tamyrik Fields showed up for Augusta with 18 points and five rebounds, while junior Deane Williams provided his second double-double in a row and his fourth of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior point guard Aaron Byrd got the start and posted 14 points with seven rebounds and four assists, despite racking up four fouls.

 

Augusta was better in every shooting category, tallying a 44.4 field-goal percentage (24-for-54), 31.3 three-point percentage (5-for-16), and an 81.8 free-throw percentage (18-for-22). The Jags held Young Harris to a 30.6 field-goal percentage (19-for-62), 27.3 three-point percentage (6-for-22), and a 60 percent shooting at the free-throw line. Despite 17 turnovers and two more than YHC, the Jags outrebounded 42-36 to help build the big lead.

 

AU held a four-point advantage at the half, 26-22, and built the first double-figure lead of the day with 10:12 to go in the game. Augusta led 47-37 and eventually built a 17-point advantage in route to a 71-56 final.

 

Augusta hosts Francis Marion on Wednesday, Jan. 17 in Christenberry Fieldhouse for a 7:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference tipoff.
