Jags Fall To League Leading UNCP, 68-62

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Augusta University men's basketball team kicked off a three-game road trip in the Peach Belt Conference on Wednesday night at UNC Pembroke and fell 68-61.

 

Augusta (7-6, 4-3 PBC) sits two spots behind league-leading UNC Pembroke (10-3, 6-1 PBC) in the Peach Belt standings. UNCP's victory was their fifth straight and keeps them atop the Peach Belt.

 

Junior Deane Williams paced Augusta with 18 points and nine rebounds, senior Kyle Doyle delivered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, and junior Aaron Byrd scored 11 with eight boards and three assists. AU outscored the Braves 34-18 in the paint, but they lost the second half 41-32.

 

The Jags dominated the boards in the game and outrebounded UNCP 50-37 overall, while winning the offensive glass 24-13. However, the Braves got to the free-throw line 20 more times than Augusta and shot 83 percent (25-for-30). AU went 7-for-10 (70 percent) from the free throw line. The field-goal percentages remained tight, with AU turning in 34 percent (25-for-73) and UNCP 33 percent (18-for-55)

 

Doyle gave the team a tip-in basket with a 1:24 left in the first half, as Augusta took halftime on top 30-27. UNC Pembroke posted a 41.7 field-goal percentage in the second half and AU to 37.1 percent shooting as they held on for the victory.

 

AU heads to Dahlonega, Ga., on Saturday, Jan. 13 to take on North Georgia for a 3:30 p.m. tipoff.
