MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Peach Belt Conference play began for the Augusta University men's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Georgia College and the Jaguars won 52-51 on a last-second layup from junior Aaron Byrd.

Augusta is now 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Peach Belt, while GC moved to 3-3 and 1-1 in the PBC.

The Jaguars trailed 51-48 with two minutes to play. GC missed a three pointer out of a timeout and Augusta's Tyvez Monroe grabbed the rebound and got it to Mikkel Kolstad. The freshman point guard found senior Tamyrik Fields for a good layup to put AU within one point. With four seconds to play, Monroe stole the ball from the Bobcats and an Aaron Byrd layup gave the Jaguars the lead and the win in the closing seconds.

Fields led the team with 16 points, while junior Deane Williams delivered 15 points and 12 rebounds. Byrd posted six points, four boards, three assists, and senior Vlad Cobzaru had six bench points with two rebounds and a steal.

Each team shot under 35 percent from field-goal range, but the Jags outrebounded the Bobcats 45-37. GC went 5-for-18 (27.8 percent) at the three-point line, while AU was 1-for-6 (16.7 percent).

GC outscored Augusta 22-11 on second-chance points, but Augusta won the second half 25-23 and came up with the timely baskets.

Augusta hosts crosstown rival Paine College on Saturday, Dec. 9 in Christenberry Fieldhouse for a 7t:30 p.m. tipoff.
