Augusta Drops 83-79 Game At Undefeated Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Augusta University men's basketball team fell 83-79 at Benedict College on Tuesday night in a non-conference game. Augusta is now 2-2 on the young season, while Benedict, who entered the game unscathed, moved to 6-0.

 

Senior Tamyrik Fields was one point shy of his career best with 23 points on the night to lead Augusta. He added eight rebounds, while junior Tyvez Monroe had 20 points and five boards. Freshman Mikkel Kolstad was four-of-five from downtown and totaled 14 points with nine assists, as junior Deane Williams delivered 10 points.

 

Augusta shot 44.4 percent from the floor (28-of-63) and went 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) shooting free throws. Benedict had a 49.1 field-goal percentage and were an 80-percent shooting team at the charity stripe.

 

The Jags had a 41-35 halftime lead over the Tigers. They outscored BC 20-8 in the opening 20 minutes and owned the second-chance points column 13-0. A 7-0 Benedict run opened the second half and switched the momentum and score to the Tigers. The score remained a six-point contest for the remainder of the time, but the Jags were unable to recover in the final three minutes.

 

Augusta hosts its first official game of the 2017-18 season this Saturday, Nov. 25 against the Bowie State Bulldogs in Christenberry Fieldhouse at 4:00 p.m.
