Augusta Takes Down Barton 80-72 To Finish 45 Second Classic

WILSON, N.C. – The Augusta University men's basketball team played host Barton College in day two of the 45 Second Classic on Saturday afternoon and won 80-72 to complete the weekend sweep for the start of the season.

 

Augusta (2-0) held off Mount Olive 76-75 in day one of the non-conference tourney on Nov. 10 and rolled Barton 80-72 on their home floor to end the event.

 

The Jaguars had four of their five starters score in double-figure points on Saturday. Augusta junior Deane Williams had 12 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 23, while freshman Mikkel Kolstad scored 20, junior Tyvez Monroe 15, and senior Tamyrik "TC" Fields 13 points.

 

AU posted a 51.8 field-goal percentage to Barton's 52.7 percent and outrebounded the Bulldogs 29-27. Barton went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe, while Augusta was 17-for-21. Barton was led in scoring by Jeff Gordon's 16 points.

 

The first half was a one-possession game for the first 13 minutes, with the score deficit never reaching beyond three points. Kolstad hit a layup with 1:45 to go in the first half to put AU up by three, but Barton buried two free throws with just over a minute to play before halftime and went into the break trailing 32-31 to the Jaguars.

 

Augusta outscored Barton 48-41 in the second to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

 

The Jags stay on the road with a trip to Carrollton, Ga., on Saturday, Nov. 18 to face West Georgia in a non-conference game at 4:00 p.m.
