Three Jags Break 20-Point Mark In 92-89 Loss At West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team played its third road game to open the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon and dropped a tight contest 92-89 in the closing seconds at West Georgia. Juniors Deane Williams, Tyvez Monroe and freshman Mikkel Kolstad all scored over 20 points for the Jaguars.

 

Augusta in now 2-1 to start the 2017-18 season under 14-year head coach Dip Metress, while West Georgia jumps to 3-0.

 

Williams had a double-double for Augusta at the half and ended with 26 points and 17 rebounds. Monroe and Kolstad each drained five three-pointers, with Kolstad scoring 23 points and Monroe 21. Kolstad and Monroe each had four rebounds and three steals as well, while junior Aaron Byrd had 10 points and five assists.

 

AU shot 53 percent from the floor to UWG's 51 percent, but the Wolves outrebounded Augusta 38-33. Each team was hot from range, with the Jags shooting 12-of-22 from three-point range and West Georgia 11-for-29. The Jags gave up 26 points to UWG's bench, while only scoring two amongst the reserves.

 

A Byrd layup and Williams dunk started the scoring for Augusta on the road. The Wolves went on a 5-0 run and took their first lead of the first half at 10-9 with 14:53 on the clock.

 

Augusta owned the first 20 minutes of play and went into the half 41-32. Williams went off in the first half and had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

 

The lead stayed to the Jaguars for the entire second half until the 8:28 mark when a UWG layup switched the score 65-64. A 7-0 run willed the Wolves ahead, but Williams and Fields each scored in the paint and tied the game at 69-all with just over five minutes.

 

It was a two-point game with 31 seconds play, when West Georgia got the basket for a layup to take the lead. Freshman Mikkel Kolstad grabbed an offensive board for the Jaguars with nine seconds left and buried a three pointer to get the team within one at 90-89.

 

West Georgia got the free throw line and held off Augusta.

 

Augusta plays at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., on Tuesday, Nov. 21 for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game.
