Mikkel Kolstad Represents Norway At Summer World University Games

TAIPEI, TAIWAN. – Augusta University men's basketball sophomore forward Mikkel Kolstad represented his home nation of Norway in the 29th Summer World University Games from August 19-30 in Taipei, Taiwan.

 

Kolstad, a 6-3 returning redshirt sophomore for the Jaguars, averaged 12.5 points per game this summer and led Norway in minutes played. He scored 28 points in the closing game on Aug. 29 against host team Chinese Taipei. Kolstad scored in double figures in five of the team's eight games.

 

"It is a great honor anytime you play for your country and Mikkel was able to play eight games and gain valuable experience in the University Games," Augusta head coach Dip Metress said. "After redshirting last year this tournament gave him a chance to play with referees while the popcorn was popping."

 

The Summer World University Games, referred to as Summer Universiade, is an international sporting and cultural event which is staged every two years in a different city. It is only second to the Olympic Games. It consists of 14 compulsory sports and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The record figures are 10,622 participants in Shenzhen, China, in 2011 and 174 countries in Daegu, Korea, in 2003.

 

The event incorporates educational and cultural aspects into 12 days of sports competitions, allowing university student-athletes from all over the world to celebrate with the host city in a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.

Coming off a 24-8 season that saw them reach the NCAA Tournament, the Augusta men's basketball team hosts 13 home games and play 29 total contests in the 2017-18 season which starts in November. See the full schedule here

 

About Augusta Men's Basketball

The Augusta University men's basketball team is led by head coach Dip Metress. On May 10, 2004, Metress was introduced as the fifth head coach in program history. He previously led the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (1996-04) and was an assistant for the Jaguars under Clint Bryant (1989-95). He has never had a losing season in his 14 seasons at the helm of the Jaguars. A two-time Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Metress and the Jags hosted five straight NCAA Regional Tournaments from 2007-11 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight three seasons in a row. He was named the South Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2007, the Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009, and the NABC Southeast District Coach of the Year in 2011.

 

Augusta men's hoops has retired four numbers in its 52-year history: Ben Madgen (1), Keshun Sherrill (10), Tyrekus 'AJ' Bowman (23), and Keenan Mann (32). The Jaguars have reached the NCAA tournament 11 times and won their region three times.
