Vlad Cobzaru Receives PBC Elite 15 Award

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta University men's basketball sophomore Vlad Cobzaru and UNC Pembroke's Avery Locklear received the Elite 15 Awards presented by EAB at the recent Peach Belt Conference awards banquet in Greenwood, S.C. The award is presented in each of the league's 15 championship sports to the student-athlete participating in the tournament with the highest cumulative GPA.  Modeled after the NCAA Elite 90 Award, 2016-17 is the fifth year the PBC has presented the honor.

A sophomore from Iasi, Romania, Cobzaru, was named to the PBC All-Academic team with a 3.75 GPA and major in chemistry. He was also named a PBC Presidential Honor Roll Gold Scholar last year. Cobzaru becomes the first Jaguar to win the Elite 15 for men's basketball and the third Augusta athlete overall.

On the court, the 6-8 forward played in all 30 games for the Jaguars and has started 10, including the last eight in a row. He averages 4.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game and shoots over 50 perfect from the field. Cobzaru scored 17 against Flagler and had 11 in the overtime win at USC Aiken on Feb. 25 – including a game-sealing dunk towards the buzzer.  Cobzaru and the Jaguars will play in the NCAA Southeast Regional beginning on Saturday.

Au drew the fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament Southeast Region and will battle fourth-seeded Columbus State in the first round this Saturday, March 11 for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff in The Levine Center. For more information click here
