Jags Use 3-Pointer To Hold Off Georgia College, 64-58

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team played a Peach Belt Conference contest at Georgia College on Saturday afternoon and prevailed 64-58 in the final minute.

With the victory, Augusta moved to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the Peach Belt while the Bobcats are now 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the PBC. The Jags entered the day leading the PBC East Division, while the Bobcats sit fourth in the PBC West Division.

Augusta was 5-for-14 (35.7 percent) from the three-point line and didn't allow one deep ball. From the floor, GC went 20-for-54 (37.0 percent) and the Jags 16-for-42 (38.1 percent) in the league win. Augusta won the rebound battle 46-27, while the Bobcats outscored them in the paint 26-16.

Junior Tamyrik Fields led Augusta with 15 bench points and sophomore Ja'Shawn Brooks added 14 off the wood. Sophomore Tyvez Monroe led the Jaguar starters with 10 points while junior Kyle Doyle and senior Keshun Sherrill each had eight points and rebounds.

Desmond Mitchell-LaFlam had 13 points to pace the Bobcats and Kohl Roberts booked 11 in the loss.

Brooks sunk a pair of threes in the opening half and tallied 10 points to lead the Jaguars at the half. Augusta went into the break on top 35-28, but the Bobcats bounced back in the second half and tied the game 38-38 with 16:02 to play after a 6-0 run.

The Jags built the lead back up by 10 with 5:40 on the clock, but nine straight GC points eclipsed the margin. Tied at 58 with just over a minute to play, Brooks found Monroe on the perimeter and he canned the fifth trey of the game to give Augusta a three-point lead.

GC fouled Sherrill and Brooks to slow the clock and the Jags got the win with a couple free throws.

Augusta hosts the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Monday, Jan. 16 for a MLK Day matchup at 3:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jags meet the Flagler Saints on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
